Jana Smetanová
Jana Smetanová is a Czech costume designer and scenographer born in 1977 in Prague, and one of the prominent figures of contemporary Czech stage costume design. She studied at a secondary school of applied arts, the Higher Graphic School in Prague, and later scenography of alternative and puppet theatre at DAMU. She also holds state exams in pedagogy and didactics and has teaching experience at KALD DAMU.
Since 2005, she has worked in long-term collaboration with director Natália Deáková. She has created costumes for productions at Činoherní studio, HaDivadlo (Indián v ohrožení), MeetFactory, Divadlo na Vinohradech, Jihočeské divadlo (1968, Perplex), and the National Theatre Brno. She has also collaborated with directors Jiří Havelka, Filip Nuckolls, Thomas Zielinski, and Katharina Schmitt, and designed stage visuals for puppet theatres in Liberec and Plzeň.
Her costumes are praised for their precise character work, functionality, and strong visual imagination.
