The Tempest was William Shakespeare’s final play and one of the most unusual in his oeuvre. It is also among his shortest works, where instead of bloody intrigues we find magic, luminous imagery, and fairy-tale motifs. In Serhiy Masloboyshchykov’s production, the play came to life on the stage of the Franko Theater as a poetic parable about power, forgiveness, and harmony. The story takes viewers to a mysterious island ruled by Prospero, a wise sorcerer who commands the elements and the fates of men. His pursuit of justice is not harsh or cruel but calm, balanced, and deeply humane. An innovative revolving stage created the impression of swiftly shifting settings, as if pages of a book were being turned: stormy seas, seashores, valleys, and forests came alive through the actors’ performance and minimalist details. In the 2010s, The Tempest became one of the Franko Theater’s brightest and most philosophical productions. It is a play that shows how wisdom can tame evil, and how forgiveness is often stronger than revenge.
