Kalynova sopilka
"Kalynova Sopilka" (The Viburnum Flute) — a Ukrainian horror performance for adults, inspired by Oksana Zabuzhko’s short story A Tale of the Viburnum Flute and the poetry of Dina Chmuz. The story of two sisters’ coming of age transforms into a female version of the Cain and Abel myth, exploring themes of evil, faith, and inheritance. Directed by Oksana Dmytriieva, the production stands out for its mystical atmosphere, haunting visual imagery, and hypnotic songs set to Chmuz’s poetry. The music, composed by Viktoriia Mishchenko and Liliia Osieichuk, is performed live by the actors themselves. The play reinterprets Ukrainian folk beliefs and rituals in the context of modern war, revealing how ancient myths continue to resonate with new meanings today.
